The Show-stopping “Garbage Kaleidoscope”

When we were young, we all had the experience of looking into a kaleidoscope with one eye– Remember how it felt like to be fascinated by the different patterns that almost never repeated themselves? Indian designer Nishant Jethi integrates the idea of the kaleidoscope with garbage and prompts the world to take a closer look at the “dazzling fashion” of garbage pollution from a new perspective.

In India, littering in public streets is the norm. Everyone does it, no matter in rural or urban areas. When local charity organizations decided to bring this issue to serious attention, they invited designer Nishant Jethi to be their wingman. Together they start an interesting experiment. They created a “Cleanoscope” and had it set up in a park in Mumbai. It indeed attracted a lot of curious onlookers to approach it for disposing trash. Exactly what is this thing? !

As a matter of fact, three mirrors were placed inside the garbage can to form a equilateral triangle. Adopting the same logic as a kaleidoscope, the multiple reflections of the trash are transformed into a strangely artistic image. Each piece of new trash would change the current pattern on display.

A week into the experiment resulted in 29 KG of litter, whereas a normal trash can collects only 12 KG. It is indeed quite impressive. Not only has this new design achieved to urge people to not litter in public, it eventually became a tourist attraction and it getting ever more visits by day! Students, business people, and even mothers with their children cannot help but to pause when approaching this trash can.
